So we’ve all heard the story about the Ugly Duckling. Everyone thinks he’s so hideous and then he ends up turning into a gorgeous swan. It’s a great story, but when you think about it, the tale still makes you put a value on beauty. It isn’t until the little feathered fellow turns into a gorgeous swan that he discovers his worth. Well this movie is kinda like that, except no transforming, just accepting your ugly as what makes you different and that makes you beautiful. The story behind it is simple and wonderful: you have flaws, it’s ok, it’s what makes you special and beautiful.
It definitely is a great movie for kids to watch. Adults, not so much. There’s not a lot of adult humor, like in a shrek type movie where the kids are entertained and adults can laugh at little subtleties. So for the adults you might just have to accept the fact that you’re going to sit through about 90 minutes of a total kid film. The voice talents given to the film are amazing. Kelly Clarkson plays the lead, an ugly doll named Moxie, who just like her name, never gives up. Rapper/Artist Pitbull is in the movie as well ironically voicing Ugly Dog. You have other amazing voices such as Janelle Monáe, Blake Shelton, Charli XCX, and Nick Jonas. However my favorite random voice was the the Ugly Pegasus which is voiced by Rapper IceT.
The movie is visually fun to watch and leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling and hopefully leaves kids with the understanding that we don’t have to be perfect to be perfectly us.
Ugly Dolls hits theaters this weekend.
